Hi. I have a valid A1 certificate which expired next year. Will I be able to renew it when it nears expiry? I know i will be paying tax overseas by then, but wasnt sure if the A1 can be renewed. I'm keen to keep up my NI contributions in the UK as I still have a good few years before retirement! Thanks in advance

Hi Jo Evans,
There are different rules for the A1 depending on your circumstances, I therefore cannot advise whether you will be able to renew the certificate.
However, if you continue to work abroad you should apply for the A1 as you did originally, we will look at your circumstances and make the determination.
There are 3 application forms for the A1:
CA3837 – if you are self employed
CA3822 – if you are employed and posted to work only in one country
CA8421 – if you are working in 2 or more countries
Thank you.

Like Jo, I am in the same position and will need to apply for the A1 via the CA3822 form. Can I just confirm that if the conditions are met the existing A1 certificate will be extended / another A1 certificate is issued?

Hi Jo,
Once your application has been submitted and processed, you will receive confirmation on whether you are eligible for another A1 certificate.
Thank you.
