How do I know if the NI credits are in excess. I have worked full time and paid NI in employment, record says full year and 52 weeks NI credit. Is this excess to my need to be counted towards a full pension amd if so is this them safe to transfer NI credit to grandparent for child care with a detrimental impact to my pension situation. Thanks

Basically I am trying to find out if the NI credits I have are in excess to my needs, dont wish to transfer them to granparent for child care if I will need for my own pension. Just cannot seem to find out how to know if the 52 weeks credit that is shown on my forecast is excess credit or used to make up my full year. Help much appreciated.

Hi eagriffi,
If you’re employed and paying class 1 National Insurance contributions, then you may pay sufficient contributions to make the tax year count for pension purposes without relying on the credits.
You may wish to either call our National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500 or write to us and we will be able to check your National Insurance account.

Thank you

Hi eagriffi,
There is a situation where a Grandparent/Family Member can apply for a transfer of Child Benefit National Insurance Credits from a Parent that has/is in receipt of Child Benefit.
We only transfer Child Benefit credits and convert them to Specified Adult Childcare Class 3 credits when the original claimant is not at loss if a transfer is made.
The grandparent/family member can submit an application form CA9176 to apply for the transfer of the credits.
Thank you.
