Hi, I'm living abroad and I have submitted the CF83 form last year. It has been accepted in Apr-23 for Class 2 contributions till 2022-23. I'd like to continue my Class 2 voluntary contributions. Do I have to resubmit the CF83 form for this tax year (2023-24) and for every future year ? Or there will be automatically a letter (or update on my online account) about the new contributions ? Thank you.

Hi cconline chat,
The letter that you received from our International Team should have accepted your application to pay voluntary contributions by either annual payment or direct debit.
If they accepted it by annual payment, then a request for payment will be issued to you shortly after the end of each tax year.
If, however, you did not actually apply to pay voluntary contributions then a new CF83 application form would be required.
Thank you.

Hi I am in the same position as Cconline chat, however on the form it does not provide details of how to pay, (just provides a link) So I am not sure if a new application form is required or not. When would the "letter" for 2023/2024 be issued and would I be able to check this online via Government gateway if I change preferences to "receive"notifications by email?

Hi Sharon2,
Payment requests are issued shortly after the end of the tax year so if you were accepted for annual payment you would be receiving the new payment request in the next couple of weeks.  You should also be able to see this communication via your Personnal Tax Account.
Thank you.

Hi. I have a related question to that of cconline chat. I live in Ireland. I completed the CF83 application manually and sent it to HMRC in January 2024. I do not expect a decision on whether I will qualify for Class 2 contributions for some time given the delays that are being encountered due to the volume of applications. Based on my work history I should qualify for Class 2 though. Last week I received a letter from HMRC which seems to be a computer generated type letter entitled 'Voluntary Class 3 National Insurance Contributions' and it has the following information: 'Voluntary Class 3 National Insurance contributions due Current period from 08/10/23 to 06/01/24 = £0.00 Arrears due prior to 08/10/23 = £89.70 Reduction = £0.00 Total amount due = £89.70' My question is whether I should pay this or wait for the HMRC decision on my NI Class? Will I be prejudiced in any way by not paying it and waiting? Might I be prejudiced by paying it if that is seen as accepting Class 3? I tried phoning the telephone number on the letter this morning but was in a queue for so long I had to get back to work and had to abandon that means of seeking clarification. Hope this forum can help. Thanks in advance, Patrick

Hi,

You can check the timescales for the CF83 application below depending on your overseas location.

Check when you can expect a reply from HMRC

The class 3 letters received are voluntary with the option to complete the tax years but that is depending on your current circumstances.
A personal tax account has the web chat services so they can look into your query if you are unable to contact the helpline.

Personal tax account: sign in or set up

You can contact the National Insurance team as below:

National Insurance: general enquiries

Thank you.
