Hello, I am foreinger and lived and worked in UE country until end of April. I moved to UK in May, I am self-employed since June . I paid quite high NI (Class II and Class IV) from June to April. But I was informed that despite the fact that I paid them for 10 months this year is not full. Can I pay voluntarily for the missing 2 months (but until the end of April I lived and worked abroad)? If no, does all money paid for NI contirbutions for these months is lost as they won't count for my state pension? I'm 39 so every full year is important to me.

Hi annavalley,
Assuming this is for a tax year from 2006-07 onwards, yes you can pay Class 3 NICs voluntarily for the beginning of the tax year during which you arrived in the UK.
You will need to contact the NI helpline on 0300 200 3500. Lines are open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday.
Thank you.

Hi andyartstudio,
To qualify for the UK State Pension, you need a minimum of 10 qualifying years to receive the lower amount.
The tax year you reach state pensionable age does not qualify to the ten years.
If you have been unable to attain the 10 years due to your circumstances, please contact the International Pension Centre at the Department of work and pensions to enquire about any potential reciprocal agreements your previous UK residency involves.

Thank you.
