Hi there, I'm the sole person employed of my family and my wife is looking after the children for many years. Her NI contributions show full year of contributions despite being out of work in the last 5 years. Is it because she's caring for someone and receive child benefit ? I wanted to see if is worth to buy any years for her but when we logged into her account I was surprised to see that. She has some years I could buy back but that was before having kids. So we are confused if that's normal or not seeing all years accredited as full contributions. Thanks.

Hi,

Parents and carers credits are Class 3 NI credits; they count towards the customer's state pension and additional state pension. Credits for parents and carers replaced Home responsibilities protection (HRP) for customers who reach state pension age on or after 6 April 2010.

Who gets credits for parents and carers?
A customer may get credits for parents and carers if they do not work or earn enough to pay National Insurance contributions and:
  • Get child benefit for a child under 12
  • Are an approved foster carer
  • Care for someone who is sick or disabled for at least 20 hours per week.
Credits will only be applied to the account after the end of the financial year.

Right, that makes sense then. Can I ask if there's an HMRC article anywhere about this ?

I am Uk national and a resident in Spain. I have a house I permanently rent out in England. I file my taxes in UK and Spain. My question is about NI contributions. I have the full 35years of contributions, but I don't know if I am supposed to continue to pay voluntary NI contributions as I earn less than my taxable allowence? I want to make sure my full state pension is now safe, and I will still get my full state pension when I'm at pensionable age in 4 years time. Regards

Hi I gave birth in 2016, i voluntarily paid my NI contributions when I didn’t need to as I believe that they’re paid for until my child is 12. Can I claim my voluntary contributions back? Thank you

Hi,
You will need to write into HMRC to request a review of your national insurance (NI) record and request a refund of paid voluntary national insurance contributions (Vol NICs), there are strict rules about refund Vol NICs and each case will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
Write to
HMRC

Please include your Full Name, NI number current address.
Thank you.
