Hello, If someone is filing a self-assessment tax return for this year 22-23 as year 1, is there any option to go back one more year and file for the year 2021-22, too? And will there be a penalty for the late tax return filing for 2021-22, considering that there will be no tax to pay? Thanks

Hi

If you have the need to file a 21/22 tax return, yes you can still file it.
However, you will likely be charged a penalty for failing to tell HMRC that it was required.

Thank you

Hi Nancy A ,
There is an option to select an earlier tax year when you log into your Self Assessment account.
The late filing penalty is £100.
Thank you.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The self-assessment account only shows the 2022-23 option. Could this maybe because the person wasn't registered before this year? And how to solve this? One more question: is the £100 penalty per year or per late filing (could be for more than one year)? Thanks

Hi,

If there is not an options shown for an earlier tax year then a notice to file a Self Assessment tax reurn has not been issued. You would need to register for Self Assessment for that tax year to update the online account.

Check how to register for Self Assessment

The £100 penalty is for late filing of the tax return so if more than one tax return outstanding then would be £100 for each tax year.

Thank you.
