Hello! I am in the process of completing my self-employed income tax self-assessment and have a question about claiming the expense of my business car insurance. The business car insurance (a carriage of goods for hire and reward policy) was in both my name and my wife’s name, and although the payment was made using my wife’s card, we shared the cost of the insurance. I was the sole user of the car for my business, and my wife did not use the car for her business. Could you please advise if I am eligible to claim this expense in my self-employed income tax self-assessment under these circumstances? Thank you!

Hi,
If you already claim expenses using the simplified method for mileage then no as this covers all aspect of running the car. if you dont use this method, you would only be able to claim a portion of the insurance so you would need to contact the company to ascertain what the rate would be when only you are insured.
Thank you.

Hi, Thank you for your reply. I do not use the simplified method for claiming mileage expenses. I have contacted the company to find out the rate when I am the only insured driver. They provided me with a new quote based on our existing car insurance, but only in my name. The quote is £149 monthly, which is more expensive than our current car insurance at £119 monthly. Could you please let me know how I can claim my portion in this situation? Thank you!

Hi,
As it is joint, use 50% of the amount you are paying.
Thank you.
