Hi there, I am from Hong Kong and arrived UK for living in March 2024, and my income is only from the bank saving interest at the moment. Hence, would you please help to advise on the question? Q: I'm going to apply split year tax for the taxation in 2023-2024, but in the webpage of self assessment, it appears only employed or self-employed to be selected. For my case, I should be literally unemployed? Or I can choose self-employed? Thank you!

Hi,
To claim split year treatment, requires the completion of a paper version of the tax return SA100 and SA109.
You cannot use the online HMRC version of the tax return:
Self Assessment tax return forms
You will need to contact the self assessment orderling to order your 2023 to 2024 tax return and supplementary pages.
Their number is 0300 200 3610.
As you were neither employed in the UK or self employed in the UK, you do not need to declare these sections.
Thank you.

Thank you for your reply! Then I have some follow up questions as below: Counting from my first arrival to the UK to the date, 05 April 2024, I had been to UK less than a month. Meanwhile, I have not been the UK before March 2024. So, I would like to ask whether I need to have self assessment for the tax year of 2023-2024? And then am I need to apply for split year treatment to separate the saving income between Hong Kong and the UK for the tax year of 2023-2024? Thank you!

Hi,
A personal UTR is required to file a tax return. If you do not have a UTR, you can apply for one here:
