Here’s a good one for you. I have successfully submitted a SATR covering my PYE and Pension earnings for FY23/24. With a result that I was due a refund, which I have just claimed. I was therefore shocked and somewhat irritated that HMRC has without cognisance to my SATR just down an automatic tax assessment against my PAYE and HMRC now tells me I owe then £1900. Seemingly ignoring the submission of the SATR. On talking to the Tax advisors online about 3 hours of dreadful hold music neither the PAYE or the SATR advisors, were trained to advise me what had gone wrong and what the SATR was effectively being ignored. Advise please? Advise

Hi,
If the £1900 calculated is from PAYE and for the 23/24 tax year, it's most likely that you didn't inform us that you intended to submit a 23/24 return prior to filing it, and that we hadn't requested one.
If a return wasn't expected, our systems may not have had enough time to stop your regular PAYE calculation being produced.
The difference in amounts owed is most likely down to the difference in figures you submitted in your return, and those declared via PAYE by your employers and pension providers.
To allow us to confirm this, contact us by webchat via Self Assessment: general enquiries
Thank you.

My major problem is that the two parts of the tax system are not joined up! The SATR was submitted and accepted well before the PAYE calculation was released. So please explain to me how either myself or my accountant that submitted the tax return on my behalf can get the system to acknowledge the existence of the SATR and cancel the PAYE calculation.

Also I do not want talk to a Webchat bot. I want to talk to a named trained advisor in person on the phone that has the ability to look at the two data systems and resolve the issue.
