Hello, I completed the self assessment return for the period 2022 -2023, how should I understand that it was accepted? Thank you in advance

Hi KaterinaKamardina,
If submitted online you will receive an online calculation.
On your online account it will show the tax return as received if successfully submitted.
Thank you.

Hello, I have a small amount of interest income, and I have contacted HMRC multiple times to inquire about applying for a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number in order to do the self assessment. However, I was informed by your representatives that due to the small amount of interest, it is not necessary to file a tax return, and therefore, a UTR number is not required. Could you please confirm if this information is correct? Thank you in advance

Hi Wui Yin,
Your untaxed savings interest needs to be greater than £10,000 to complete a Self Assessment. You can check if you meet the criteria at:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return.
Thank you.

Hi, I have received a letter from HMRC that I have to file tax return for the tax year Apr2023 to Apr 2024, but my total income for the period is under £12570. Do I have to register my self assessment? Thanks

Hi marion3js ip,
It is not possible to check individual tax records through this forum. However, there are a number of reasons why you may need to register for Self Assessment. Further details can be found here:

If you have received a letter from HMRC telling you to register but you believe you are not required to do so please contact our helpline:

Thank you.

I am British and after living in Spain for many years I have moved back to Northern Ireland where I was born. I have registered with the Spanish tax authorities and accepted as being no longer a resident of Spain from 31st of December 2024. I receive both UK and Spanish state pensions which take me over the tax threshold that I understand it to be of £12,570. I called HMRC and explained my situation, they said I would have to register for self assessment and sent me a form, I filled in the form adding to reflect that I receive a state pension from Spain by selecting 'Other income' and sent it back. I received a letter back telling me: We cannot register you for self assessment because the information you've given on the form shows that you don't meet the conditions for Self Assessment. For full details of these conditions go to: www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns/who-must-send-a-tax-return This link just takes me to all the same information that suggested I register for Self Assessment in the first place and prompted me to phone HMRC in the first place. Is trying to keep within the rules really this difficult? Not that I want to pay tax if I don't have to but I don't want to be chased up in the future for not registering for self assessment and making declarations for my state pensions and am just trying to do what I have read and been told over the phone that I need to do... that I do need to register for self assessment 'pay tax as I understand it' and yet I am told I am not accepted for self assessment, what does one need to do to know where they stand?
