From 2020-2021 I was UK resident and self-assessing. From 2021-2024 I was a non-resident in the UK. On my return, I was told by several HMRC team members that I needed a new UTR as my previous UTR/account had been closed. I can still log into that UTR, and it gives no indication of being inactive. I need to self-assess for personal income tax 2024-2025, so what is the procedure for getting a new/replacement UTR? When I call, I can't get past the voicebot and just get a text message that doesn't answer this question.

For assistance you would need to contact the online helpdesk:

Thank you.

Not HMRC...the only time you have a replacement UTR is if courts are appointed (bankruptcy)...other than that a UTR is good for your lifetime (like a NI number)...do NOT apply for a new/replacement, use the one you have

The page at https://www.gov.uk/register-for-self-assessment should, after a couple of questions, take you to an online form for re-registering for Self Assessment using your existing login and UTR.
