Hello, I have received a Self Assessment Notice to complete a tax return for 6 April 2021 to 5 April 2022, but at this period of time I wasn’t a resident of UK and also I didn’t have any income in UK, only foreign income, does it mean that I don’t need to complete a tax return for this period? Thank you in advance.

Hi KaterinaKamardina,
If you do not meet the criteria for completing a Self Assessment tax return, you will need to contact our webchat facility at to report this.

We can review your circumstances and if appropriate, withdraw your tax return.
If you choose not to report this, you will begin to accrue late filing penalty and interest charges.
Thank you.

I received a letter from HMRC to charge me a penalty GBP100 due to Late Tax Return for the year ended 5 April 2023. Is that means I need to file tax return for the year from 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023 ? In order to avoid interest for late payment, I have paid penalty. But I arrived in the UK July 2023 via BNO Visa, I have retired, I think I should file tax return for the financial year from 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024 for my interest (foreign interest) from Bank, is it correct ? I have received my UTR no. for the tax return year 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024, I am going to file tax return for this financial year. In this case, If I need to submit my tax return self assessment for the year from 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024 and not from 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023, what should I do now? How can I chase back my penalty ? Awaiting for your reply. Thank you very much. Best regards.

Hi,
If you arrived in the UK in July 2023, you may not need to file a 2022 to 2023 tax return. You can contact Self Assessment team by webchat or phone via link below, and we can review the requirement to file a return, and advise further on the associated penalty.
