RE: Do I need to pay national insurance?
Hi
Yes. As a freelance writer, you are self employed as a writer.
You will need to register as self employed and declare the royalties as turnover of a self employed writer.
The profit after deduction of expenses, is taxable and subject to Class 2 and Class 4 national insurance, if the profits exceed the thresholds.
Please have a look at Check how to register for Self Assessment
and Rates and allowances: National Insurance contributions.

RE: Foreign Tax Credit Relief
Hi
As completing online, you dont need the SA106 as this is the paper equivelant.
By entering the foreign tax paid at that section, this already reduces the taxable income and as such has given you the foreign tax credit relief and you should not claim it again.
Thank you -
RE: First ever pension contribution
Hi
In order to qualify for relief, the maximum is limited to your relevant earnings for the tax year.
The £60k limit is to avoid a pension tax charge. You cannot backdate your contributions as relief is only due in the tax year the payment is made.
What you may be thinking of is the unused allowance form previous year to avoid the pension tax charge.
Further guidance is at Tax on your private pension contributions

RE: Self Assessment - If you have not paid enough tax
Hi
If you want your code to remain as is and not collect the underpayment in your 2024/25 tax code you would answer no.
If you do answer no then any balancing payment calculated from your 2022/23 Self Assessment will be due by 31 January 2024.

RE: What counts as foreign income for a UK based freelancer?
Hi
You will include it as part of your self employed turnover income.

RE: Child Benefit
Hi JamesB10216
If the pension contributions are taken from your salary before the tax is calculated then you have already received the relief for the pension contributions and the higher income chil benefit charge will be based on your P60 pay figure.
Thank you
