The deadline for paying NI gaps between April 2006 and April 2016 has been extended to 5 April 2025. Is it still possible to pay for these gaps at Class 2 level if you were employed overseas during the period April 2006 and April 2016? If so, what is the process, as this is not entirely clear on the Gov.UK website. Thanks for your insights........

Hi JRHMRC,
It is still currently possible to pay class 2 for periods overseas for tax years 2006-2016.
You must apply to pay however using application form CF83 which can be found on the GOV.UK website. Please find a link to the form below:
Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)
Thank you.

Hi,
If you either live abroad or live in the UK but are paying for a period when you worked or lived abroad.
You have to create a reference number for yourself, different to the 18 digit reference number that the gov.uk website asks for when you try to make the payment through the “Pay Online” Section. You Use your National Insurance number followed by ‘IC’, your surname then your initial.
Currently you can’t make a payment with this type of reference number online.
Please follow the “Make an online or telephone bank transfer” section. I am unable to advise whether this will change in future.
Thank you.

I worked overseas during the 06/16 period and work and paid NI in the UK up to that period and had 30 years NI. I am now back in the UK and due to receive my state pension in 2025. I completed a CF83 form and received a grid with the amount at class 2 National insurance that I could pay to fill gaps in my record for while I was overseas. As requested I contacted the relevant department to check that I could pay these gaps and increase my state pension and was told the amount my pension would increase by. I duly paid the relevant amount for two gap years. After recently hearing a number of people saying you are not allowed to do this I am concerned that I have wasted my money. Does anyone know if you can still pay gaps if you have 30 years by 2016.

Hi Spud Spud64,
I am afraid that HMRC are unable to advise on pension entitlement.
We can tell you what you can pay, how much it will cost and how to make the payment.
You appear to have had advise form DWP before making payment and I see no reason to doubt the advice you were given was correct.
However if you want to check, you will need to speak to DWP.
The future pension centre number is 0800 731 0175  and they are open 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
Thank you.
