A few years ago I had a discrepancy with my PAYE, it looked like someone was claiming to be me and working under my NI number and after a lot of phone calls back and forth to HMRC it was put down as a mis-matched NI number and I was told it was resolved. I haven't checked my personal tax account for a while and my log in details had been deleted so I had to go through all the process of creating a new one and confirming my ID - now I have logged in I can see that again someone is still using my details to work and even the address on the PAYE record is not my address. So it is clearly not a mis-matched NI number someone is clearly committing fraud in my name. What are my options now? Can't get through on the phone to HMRC - do I contact the police? My oldest son is applying for Uni and these PAYE record will reflect on his student finance - I need this resolved once and for all.

Hi,
Unfortunately, you seem to have been contacted by a scam pretending to be HMRC as we would not contact you via an automated service.
You should block the number through your telephone provider, if the call was received on a mobile device then you can report and block the number as spam. You can report the call here:
Report suspicious HMRC emails, text messages and phone calls
You can look at your National Insurance record online through your personal tax account to see if you have anything held on the record that is not familiar.
If you do not currently have a PTA you can set one up here:
Personal tax account: sign in or set up
Thank you.

Hi good day everyone. I came across this post and I was thinking it is best to post my experience. Just yesterday I had received an email from HMRC that they will change my taxcode starting April 2024 to 2026. But I notice that the address name is not my name it's different person's name. So I decided to checked my HMRC App to check if there's any changes to my person details. So when I opened my HMRC App I was so surprised that it is now under a different person's name and different address but the date of birth is still mind and of course the National Insurance is mine. I am 110% theast time I checked my HMRC App was July 2024 it was under my name.e and address and to think registering to HMRC App it needs your name , date of birth and national insurance. I rung the HMRC and spoke to someone she asked me loads of questions and the one that baffles me she said if I am claiming universal credit. So I pressume that the womens name wjo is using my National insurance number is claiming universal credit because I don't claim any deny from the government not even child tax credit I don't claim them even though I have kids. So I gave her all the details she needed like when did I had my national insurance, my address, my name and if I had any previous address prior to mu curre t address. She said to me that she will refer my case to HMRC different department for investigation. I asked her how long does it takes because I am pretty much sure this new person using my National Insurance this one happens after July 2024 and if she is claiming national insurance I think it is easier for the HMRC to track this women. I was just surprise I live in Wales and all of my previous tax record fron previous employers in my HMRC record are all in Wales but the other person using my National Insurance is from Isleworth which I believe England area. What should I do so this will be actioned sooner and hopefully I can get my national insurace back without any third party using on it. I do hope this won't happened to other working individuals who work so hard paring taxes and then suddenly found out someone else is using their national insurance. Something should have been done to refrain this to happen it should flagged up in the system that another person using someone else's national insurance. How long does it take to hear if my case is now being forward for investigation after a conversation of your HMRC advisor?

Hi Marian,
Without your National Insurance Number sorry we cannot see the progress your case.
Normally in confused ID cases like this our specialist team will establish who is the correct owner of the account and remove erroneous details after taking information from both parties involved.
If this can be done over the phone it will be quicker than if we need to write to an individual.
If you have not had any response after four weeks then would be worth getting in touch again.
This can happen if two individuals have same/similar personal details and the NI numbers get mixed up.
The records of the account holder will not be lost, any erroneous information will be removed and the account returned to its original state at the end of the investigation.
Thank you.

Urgent Help Needed: My National Insurance Number is Being Used Fraudulently by Another Company I need some urgent advice. I have discovered that another company, which is actually a dormant company with no funds or income, has been using my National Insurance (NI) number without my knowledge. They have issued payslips under my name, showing amounts I have never received in my bank account. This is clear fraud, and now I am being asked to pay tax on income that I have never earned. I am actively trying to contact HMRC — calling multiple times, filling out online forms — but I have not been able to get through to anyone or receive proper guidance. I have also tried searching for online forums or official pages where I can raise this issue directly, but I am lost. I don’t even know the correct address to send a letter to HMRC about this situation. My main concerns: • I need to remove this fraudulent company from my NI contributions record. • I need to make sure I don’t get taxed for money I never received. • I need to report this fraud urgently. If anyone has dealt with this before or knows the correct steps, phone numbers, addresses, or online forms that actually work, please help me. Thank you so much for any advice you can give.
