If I were to move abroad and all my tax is up-to-date. Would I still need to inform HMRC and if so how should I do it once I am abroad? I may not know precisely when a move if and when I choose to go, so it's rather confusing how I would advise HMRC when the time arises.

Hi njc23,

You can do this with a P85 - Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK.

Thank you.

Thank you your reply. I usually do a tax return as I am director. However by the time I leave I will not have been and will not have any further tax liabilities as I will be moving in a future tax year. On this basis, would you kindly confirm that a p85 would suffice. Also, if I am abroad how would I inform the tax man as I will not know the exact dates I leave and may not be enough time to inform HMRC prior to me leaving. I await your response

Hi,

A P85 should be used to inform HMRC that you are leaving the United Kingdom.

Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK

There is a self assessment criteria tool, which will help you work out if a tax return is required. If a tax return is not required, you will need to contact HMRC to advise them of this. This will prevent future tax returns being issued.

Thank you.

Hello there, Would I do a P85 as soon as I know I am leaving ? or shall I wait when I have definitely left. If so sending the form abroad may be tricky. Please advise the most sensible approach.

Hi njc23,

You would need to wait until you have your P45 and that your travel arrangements are confirmed so that you know you are definately leaving.

Thank you.

Hello, I thought I was permanently moving abroad (for 3 years) and filled out a P85. However, I returned to England after only a week. (Was not earning in UK during this period or currently since.) Do I need to inform HMRC? Thanks.

Hello, I moved permanently back to Greece in the beginning of 2024 after living in the UK for the last 8 years. I complete a Self Assessment Tax Return and I am currently filing my online tax return to HMRC for the tax year 2023-2024. Do I need to complete the ‘residence’ section (form SA109) and send it by post to HMRC this year or next year? Is there any other, simpler, way to inform the HMRC that I am no longer a resident of the UK and I will not be completing self assessments from the tax year 2024-2025 onwards as I will be a Greek resident and I will be taxed here in Greece. Kind regards

Hi nikarako,
If you need to complete the SA109 then you will not be able to file this using HMRC software.
You will need to either complete the from online using 3rd party commercial software:
Self Assessment commercial software suppliers
Or complete a paper tax return.
If you need a paper tax return you can order here:
Self Assessment: forms ordering

Thank you.

Hi again, Thank you for your response to my initial message. I would like to understand if I need to complete the SA109 form and send it to HMRC this year or next year? Because the current version of the form refers to tax year 2023-2024 that I was a UK resident. I moved back to Greece in January 2024 and I spent more than 6 months living in the UK for tax year 2023-2024. I would like to fill in my tax return to HMRC online for tax year 2023-2024 and then next year to inform HMRC that I am now a resident of Greece and send the SA109 form next year. I cannot complete a paper tax return this year as I have nearly completed my online tax return and I cannot meet the deadline of 31st of October for paper tax return. Is sending the SA109 form next year for the tax year 2024-2025 acceptable to HMRC? King regards

Hi I am going travelling for the next few years but during that time i will be returning to the UK around at least 4 weeks a year. I am renting out my house while away. Should i be still paying UK tax on the rental while i am away. Thanks

Hi ,

Thank you for your letter.

Although you will be overseas for a period of time, rental income from within the UK remains taxable in the UK due to the taxing rights.

So if you earn rental income, there would be an expectancy for if your profits do not exceed £1000 to be declared through PAYE,
or net income after deductions exceeds £2,500, to be declared through Self-Assessment.

Thanks

Hello, I had moved from the UK to Germany and I am now moving for a period of time to work in the UAE and will be receiving income from the UAE. Do I need to inform the HMRC about this move, especially if some of all of the income will be transferred into my UK bank account either directly from the employer of by myself? If so, how can I inform the HMRC about this?

Not HMRC...Nikarako, the response you received via HMRC didnt expand enough. You advised you moved out of UK in Jan 24. As such, split year may apply for 23/24, in which case you should have completed 23/24 on paper or via 3rd party software only to include residence pages. Otherwise, without completing residence pages for 23/24 HMRC will consider you UK tax resident for the entire year and can (and will) seek to tax any foreign income from Jan 24 to 5 April 2024. If there is no foreign income (in Greece?) its not the end of the world, but you wont be able to complete 24/25 accurately as you wont be able to enter the date of leaving on those forms as it is in the previous year.

Hey all, I need some advice for filling out the P85 form. I've just left the UK and have worked this tax year, however, I was travelling for 2 years prior. I returned to the UK a couple of days before the end of the financial year but didn't work in tax year 23/24. Prior to travelling, I lived in the UK all my life so do I include the 2 years of travel in the overall number? And how should I answer 'Were you a resident in the UK in the tax year before the one you left in?' considering I returned for a few days prior to the end of the tax year? Thanks

Hi Martin,
You will use the date of leaving for the current period.
Yes, include the 2 years travelling as still being part of UK period and yes you were resident prior to leaving.
Thank you.
