  • RE: Lost NI number after work and travel visa in early 2000s

    Hi,

    If you had been given a National Insurance number and handed it to your employer, it will have been located on your payslips, P45’s and P60 documents.
    A P60 is a record of your employment within a tax year to retain for reference. If you did not prove your identity and get issued with an official National Insurance number, you will have been assigned a temporary one.(Only for tax purposes-not official)

    You can contact the National Insurance enquiry helpline below for assistance in tracing your National Insurance number or by going to HMRC and placing CA5403 into the search bar and posting the form to the address on there.

    As you have stated you are overseas, if you are a resident overseas you would not need a UK National Insurance number for another countries process.

  • RE: Paying voluntary NI while receiving child benefit

    Hi,

    The child benefit award gives you national insurance class 3 credits. Class 3 credits only count towards the state pension as a qualifying tax year.
    As you are self-employed you may have the option to pay class 2 credits. Class 2 credits count towards claims for benefits on top of counting towards the state pension.
    If you need to claim benefits for any work-related issues in your self-employment the class 2 payments of national insurance count to being able to receive sick pay for an example.

    You will need to contact the HMRC National Insurance helpline to enquire about the tax years that are showing as under review. We need to discuss these tax years with you if you are looking to pay national insurance for them first.

    Once you are aware of the status of these tax years, I would also advise contacting the Department for Work and Pensions to enquire on how many tax years you need to contribute fully for a full state pension.
    This can be done on your personal tax account where you advised us on the tax year status. However, to pay voluntary contributions for some tax years it may not benefit your state pension in older years, the Department for Work and Pension can calculate your pension to its maximum.

  • RE: Pension for the EEU national if he started working in England at the age of 60

    Hi,

    If your friend has attained a pension in another country state, the years working in the UK could be of benefit with that country as they have not attained the UK minimum requirements.
    The UK government can not advise on foreign countries state requirements for their pensions, I would advise them to also speak to the authorities in those countries.
    Your friend would benefit from contacting the Department for work and Pensions, they have an international pension centre where they may be able to advise on rules for foreign countries.

    I can confirm that the current timescale for your application is 40 weeks if you are applying from an EU country. The team is currently working on applications received on 06 February 2023.

    If you are applying from a country outside of the EU, the current timescale for that team is 44 weeks, they are working on applications received on 09 January 2023.

    Hi,

    You will need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions for any questions in relation to the qualifying conditions for the state pension and what happens when you achieve the maximum qualifying years required.

    Please call the Pension Forecast helpline if you are coming up six months to the date of your retirement, alternatively if you are at 6 months until your state pension date and beyond that you will need to call the State Pension service.
