You will need to register as self employed if you wish to pay voluntary class 2 NIC, even although you are completing a self assessment tax return each year.
Self assessment is used to collect class 2 and class 4 NIC, where the net profits meet the NIC thresholds.

If you do return the the UK then your record would be reviewed at the tax year end. If you then have an underpayment of tax, a calculation would be issued with the details and how it would be collected.

RE: EIS tax relief claim - previous year
Hi,
On page TR6 of SA100, box 1 is for declaring tax refunds you have received from HMRC during the tax year.
If you declare your EIS on the tax return and include a figure in this box for the refund you have already had, it will be taken into account when calculating your tax liability.
The online tax return also has the same box.

Hi,
If the figures entered in your tax return are in the correct boxes, including tax deducted, the calculation will be correct. You may find that in addition to the tax owed for the tax year, sa 2023 to 2024, you are being asked to make a payment in advance for 2024 to 2025. This is know as a payment on account.
