Hi HMRC Admin I had an NI number when I was a student in 2011-14. But whn I return to UK this year as Skilled Worker I have started using my old NI number like before. But Recently I have seen tht In my new BRP I also have a different NI Number. I have been in Uk for almost 11 months and my employer is using my old NI number. So I am paying tax on my old NI for last 11 months. Am I doing the right thing or I have to use the new NI number? Plz suggest me how can I change my NI number and what will happen to my tax and NI contribution which I am paying now with the wrong NI number.

Hi HMRC Admin I am a student in my Internship and my first name starts with M and Last name starts with B so my twin brother wanted to start work somewhere and he found out that because we both are twins and both of our first and last name are the same what the system did was it gave me my twin brother's NI number as mine because my brother first applied for an NI number an did not work with it so I applied ,because I was looking for work the system gave me exactly the same NI Number of my Brother and so I have been working with that for the past 5 months. So I have contaced the NI helpline service and they told me to get a new one by apply again will this affect my workplace do I just need to tell them that my NI has Changed.

Hi,
If you have never had your own National Insurance Number then you will need to register for one.
When you receive your National Insurance Number then you should give this to your employer who will then start submitting your contributions to use using your correct Number.
Thankyou.

Hi Mirza Baig,
You have advised that the National Insurance helpline told you to apply for a National Insurance number.
If you have done this and received your own National Insurance number, you will need to tell your employer your correct National Insurance number.
For the current tax year (06/04/2023 to 05/04/2024) your employer will be able to amend any submissions they have made incorrectly.
For tax years prior to 2023-2024, please write to HMRC at the following address:
Individual Caseworker
PT Operations North East England
HM Revenue & Customs
BX9 1AN
Please provide the following information:
•    Your employers name and address
•    The employers PAYE reference number
•    The date you started your employment
•    The correct and incorrect National Insurance number
•    Enclose copies of payslips or P60s for the period
If you have not applied for your own National Insurance number, please contact the National Insurance helpline so we can check if a number has been allocated to you.
The number to ring is 0300 200 3500, lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Thank you.

Hello, I was given an NI number when I worked in the UK for 2 months in 2022-2023. When I called to claim back my tax, HMRC notified me of a mismatch, suggesting someone else was using my number. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago (I came back to work the next tax year), I got a letter from HMRC stating the NI number belonged to someone else and that the Department for Work and Pensions will reach out so I can be registered. DWP sent an application for a new NI number, due by Feb 27th. However, I called HMRC and verified my identity and changed my address. The next time I called, I wasn’t verified but the representative located my correct NI number and said it’ll be sent through post. It's been 12 days. Should I still apply for a new NI number of what is the best next step to solve this? Thanks

Hi I got two NI numbers one on my BRP and another one from a letter that I received from Department of Work and Pensions. My payslip has the NI number on my BRP and I'm taxed on an emergency tax code. I contacted the HMRC on phone about the wrong tax code and got informed that it could be because of the two NI numbers. I was told that I'll receive a letter but not yet received. How should I move forward?

Hi alia,
If your correct National Insurance number was traced and issued to you when you called HMRC, there will be no need for you to apply for a new National Insurance number.
Thank you.

Hello HMRC, I received my P800 letter for tax refund. It had my correct name, address and my previous job. However, it had a wrong NI number with the asterisks. I signed in online to claim it but because of the difference in the NI number, I couldn’t find it online. I’m not sure how the NI was incorrect on the paper. Please help and what can I do ?

Hi, I have recently moved home, and when trying to update my address for HMRC, I had to create a new sign-in for Government Gateway as mine had been deactivated for inactivity, When trying to use my NI number is was saying it did not match my details, like name, DOB, etc. I spoke with an online chat and had my NI number posted to me, which is the same Letters and numbers but in a different order to what I originally thought, I have sent my last 5 years P60s to yourselves and am awaiting a response on what I should do next? Will my NI numbers be combined? Do I need to pay more? Have I overpaid? I really need an answer so I can stop panicking! My 2018-2019 P60s are the correct number, Anything from 19-24 has been the wrong number, What do I need to do next? Please help,

Hi Ccarlisle29,
We will be able to trace for the contributions that were paid under the wrong National Insurance Number by using the P60s that you’ve said that you sent to us and arrange for them to be transferred to your correct Number.  Once our Team has done this they will write to you to confirm what they have done and will quote the National Insurance Number that you should use from now on.
Once the contributions are recorded on your correct National Insurance account, you may wish to obtain a State Pension Forecast via:  Check your State Pension forecast  This will detail your current and future entitlement to a UK State Pension.
Thank you.

hello, I have been working the past year and a half under the wrong national insurance number. I have recently moved job so it is all correct with my current employer, however I don't know how to fix the past year and a half and don't want it to effect my tax or record of working and pension. If you could please get back to me with a solution. Thank you.

Hi,
Please check your Personal Tax Account (PTA) to see if the NICs you have paid have been credited to you Sometimes this type of issue is resolved by HMRC when the incorrect details come through from the employer.
If your PTA does not show the correct information, please write to the following address:
Contribution Caseworker
HM Revenue and Customs
National Insurance Contributions and Employer Office
BX9 1AN
You should include your correct NINO and also the incorrect one you have used.
Please also include copies of any payslips or P60s you have and any other relevant documents.
Please do not send original paperwork.
This type of query cannot be dealt with by telephone as we need to see the documents.
To manage your expectations, the area that would deal with this are currently working on letters that were received on 23 January 2024.
Thank you.
