Hi, I have just got a P800 statement and own circa £900 tax for the 2022/23 tax year. The calculation looks correct. Rather than have my tax code adjusted, I want to pay the tax due. The P800 says ”Or you can pay the tax you own now online through your Personal Tax Account” However, when I go onto my Personal Tax Account to pay it say “You paid the right amount of Income Tax for 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023” When I spoke to the IR customer help line, I was told the only way I can pay this tax due is to send in a letter together with a cheque for payment. Is this right?

Hi,

Yes, that is correct. You can send a cheque, bankers draft, postal order or 3rd party cheque.

If you have a payslip P254 you can send the cheque with that.

If you do not have a payslip then you can send the cheque with a covering letter to HMRC Direct, BX5 5BD.

The letter should include your full name and address, NINO, amount of payment, what the payment is for (eg PAYE Underpayment) and the tax year due.

Thank you.

Thank you “HMRC Admin 32” for that update. I can now follow your advice on how to pay this outstanding tax by cheque. I suppose my only remaining query is why the P800 says: - ”Or you can pay the tax you own now online through your Personal Tax Account” Is that a mistake on the form? It would so much easier to have a ability to just pay this outstanding online via my Personal Tax Account Best Wishes

Hi Fozboy,
If the underpayment is for the last tax year 2022/23 then if shown on your Personal Tax Account there would be the option to pay.
Thank you.

Thank you “HMRC Admin 31” for that update. The underpayment is indeed for the 2022/23 tax year. Strangely my Personal Tax Account still says: - “You paid the right amount of Income Tax for 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023”. Why is there a mismatch between the P800 and my personal tax account? Should they be displayed the same data? Best Wishes

Hi Fozboy,
If the tax year was initially reviewed and an underpayment was calculated and if the tax year was reviewed again as the underpayment already calculated it would then show correct tax paid as the underpayment already calculated.
Thank you.

Hi, mine is the same, I’ve had a letter and been told I owe tax, but no way to pay it if I want to make a one off payment, i’ve been on the phone to HMRC and they’ve not been helpful with it. According to my online records I don’t owe any money, so my main question is do I go by what I’ve been told with the P 800 or what is online

I have the same issue. My P800 says I have underpaid for 2022-23, and I agree. But when I logon to my personal tax account it says I have paid the correct amount. Moreover, contrary to the comment by HMRC Admin 25 above, when I check the tax for 2022-23 I see the message "Based on the information that HMRC have, £xxx was the right amount of Income Tax for you to pay.", where xxx is the amount of tax I actually paid, but less than the amount I should have paid. If I have to make payment by cheque in the post, what is the latest date for doing this before my 2024-25 tax code is changed to reclaim the underpayment?

Hi Katie, I wanted to pay the money quoted in P800, rather to have my tax code lowered in the next tax year to reclaim the underpaid tax. (The P800 calculation was correct) – so that element was down to my personal choice. My guess is that if you do not the underpaid tax as indicated in the P800, at some point HMRC will lower your tax code to enable them to reclaim any underpaid tax. So I: - As per this post and the advice from HMRC, I paid the outstanding tax for the 2022-23 tax year by cheque with a covering letter with all my details and the tax year the money should be credited too. (2022-23). The cheque was successfully cleared, so good so far. Unfortunately, even after the cheque had been cleared for circa 3 weeks, no credit appeared to have been made to my personal tax account :>( Had to make another call to the HMRC, where I was told the money had been credited into the “wrong system”. The HMRC customer services staff member, who seems very pleasant, said she would put a request through to Revenue Accounts team to have the money moved from the “wrong system” into my “correct”2022-23 tax year. The estimated completion date of that task is circa 15 Jan so I will see if that estimate stands up to reality. Now another strange thing about the HMRC personal tax account system. While I was the phone, and the as the customer service team member was accessing my account – the mere accessing of my account from the HMRC end caused my personal tax account to NOW display the underpaid tax for the 2022-23 tax year and that figure now agreed with the P800. The online payment option also now become available. (Not that I want to pay for a second time!) If only the HRMC system had said that in the first place. Hopefully HMRC was improve the correlation of the P800’s and the data in the personal tax accounts in future versions. Thanks

Update:- The Cheque that I posted in to clear the P800 outstanding 2022-23 tax has now successfully credited to the correct tax year, and is visible in my online personal tax account. So that was completed quicker than expected :>)

Hi, Last year I had £92 due simple assessment tax which I paid on time. This year last week I got p800 due tax letter in my hmrc online inbox that states I owe £1,261.60. By mistake I paid the money online via simple assessment payment link and put my last year’s simple assessment charge reference. What should I do now? Thank you

Hi, Thanks for responding. I have successfully now paid the due amount of p800 by sending a cheque and paying slip provided by hmrc. The amount has successfully been received by hmrc as well but it is not reflected in my hmrc online account. It's been over 7 days now. How long will it take to reflect? Thank you.

I've got exactly the same issue as Fozboy. Received a letter red 2023-2024 tax year and owe tax. Letter states i can pay online, I think great so logged into Personal Tax account and for 2023-2024 it states the right amount. Puzzling. Called HMRC the guy I spoke to said to make payment online to the following account:- HMRC Shipley Bank Sort code: 083210 Acc No: 12001020 With my NI number as the reference. The amount is nearly £3000, so feels a bit like would end up in a HMRC "black hole". So I spoke to someone I who know is a tax accountant and they strong advised not to do this. I found this forum and Fozboys experience. There I've just called HMRC helpline again, and the guy said to do the following:- Get a cheque payable to "HMRC" for the amount. Write a covering letter including Full Name, NI number, state the amount owed and that its to the under payment of tax owed in 2023-2024 tax year. So I'll do that because it might not fall into some HMRC account black hole. But why can you just not get the system to work properly so I can pay what I owe online? so avoid all this wasted time and frustration to avoid HMRC messing about with my tax code?
