  • RE: How to Pay Voluntary National Insurance Contributions from Abroad

    Hi Ian Macdonald,

If you would like to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions for the period that you are overseas, then please complete and return our CF83 application form
after reading leaflet NI38 ‘Social Security Abroad’.  The NI38 and CF83 can be found at the following weblink:  Social Security abroad: NI38
Voluntary class 2 contributions, currently £3.45 a week, maintain a National Insurance account for State Pension purposes as well as for claims to Employment & Support Allowance made in the United Kingdom.
Voluntary class 2 contributions may be paid as long as the individual is employed or self-employed overseas and were normally employed or self-employed in the UK before their departures.  There are additional criteria but our International Team will be able to assess this for you.
Voluntary class 3 contributions, currently £17.45 a week, maintain a National Insurance account for State Pension purposes.  You do not have to be employed or self-employed to pay this class and additional criteria is involved but again our International Team will assess this for you.

    Thank you.

  • RE: repayment on wftc overpayment increased without explanation or notification

    Hi ts962,

You will have to contact the repayment helpline to discuss, their number is  0345 302 1429
I am assuming that it is WTC not WFTC which was replaced in 2003.

    Thank you.

  • RE: Working tax credit overpayment

    Hi Diana64,

Section 28 of the Tax Credits Act 2002 tells us if the amount we have paid claimants for a tax year exceeds the amount of which they were entitled, it is known as an overpayment and we will make a decision on whether the overpayment should be repaid. How caseworkers reach a decision to recover overpayments is set out in COP26.
Where we have made a decision that the overpayment must be repaid, Section 29 of the Act says we must give notice to the claimants regarding the amount to be repaid, and how this is to be recovered. When a customer falls out of tax credits and their debt moved to Debt Management, s29(3) of the TCA2002 allows the debt to be treated as a taxes debt and recovered on this basis.
Timescales for the recovery of some debts in England and Wales are dealt with by the Limitation Act (LA). The LA states that generally the time limit for the commencement of collecting a debt is six years from the date the debt became payable. This rule does not apply to tax credits and the pursuit of the debt.
To discuss repayment in light of their personal circumstances I suggest they contact HMRC to discuss.

    Thank you.

  • RE: Missing NI years

    Hi Darren is asking,

I note that you have P60s for a couple of tax years but your Personal Tax Account (PTA) shows that they are not qualifying for pension purposes.
If your earnings for these tax years are recorded on your PTA, it would suggest that some voluntary class 3 contributions may be required for these tax years to count
    for pension purposes.
You may wish to call our National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500 to discuss these tax years and check whether any voluntary contributions are required.
Before you decide to pay voluntary contributions you should contact the Future Pension Centre to make sure that it is beneficial for you to pay them, their telephone
    number is 0800 7310175.
If your earnings for these tax years are not recorded on your PTA then please send us copies and we’ll arrange for these contributions to be traced and put onto your
    National Insurance account.
    Our postal address is:
    HM Revenue & Customs,
    PT Operations North East England,
    BX9 1AN

    Thank you.
