RE: Foreign Income and Split Year Treatment
Hi,
The salary payements were for work carried out while you were resident in Hong Kong. These salary payments will not be taxable in the UK. If split year treatment applies, it would start from the date you arrived in the UK. The tax return supplementary page SA102 Box 1, is for the amount of overseas employment income converted to pounds sterling. You would also show the foreign employment page (SA106) income and tax deducted (in pounds sterling). The completion date of the sale of the property was while you were resident in Hong Kong. Any gain arising from the disposal would not be taxable in the UK.

RE: National Insurance and pension qualifying years whilst non resident
Hi,
Unfortunately we cannot give specific advice about your NICs whilst travelling around the world, but you can find general advice via the following link on Gov.uk
Social Security abroad: NI38
You will need to confirm with your employer if they will be deducting NIC from your monthly earnings. If you are earning below the monthly Treshhold for deducting NICs, you may not have a Qualifying year towards your pension. There is information in the above leaflet about paying voluntarily into the UK system.
If you need any further advice, you can contact our International NI Enquiry line.
National Insurance: non-UK residents

RE: Can I get a statement of NI Contributions or U1 if I’m still living and working in UK
Hi,You can apply for a statement of UK National Insurance contributions while you are still living and working in the UK. You would request this by completing application form CA3916.
Get a statement of your National Insurance contributions (CA3916)
You would choose the option to apply for a Statement of National Insurance contributions rather than a U1 statement. A U1 statement is required by the authorities in the country you are going to, to assist you with a claim to unemployment benefit in that country. It can only be applied for after you have left the UK (or if you are within 2 weeks of your date of departure).
If you are having problems completing the application for a statement of National Insurance contributions, you can contact the online services helpdesk who will be able to assist you.
Technical support with HMRC online services
You can call them using the number in the link above. However, the Statement of National Insurance contributions would not be proof that you are health insured in the UK. It is for information purposes only.If the Bulgarian Authorities require proof that you are health insured in the UK, they would need to request a S041 certificate from HMRC. They would request this by submitting a S040 application. This has to be requested by the Bulgarian Authorities, you cannot request this certificate.

RE: What happenes if I don't pay NI?
Hi,
If you have a Personal Tax Account (PTA) you can check it at the end of each tax year to see if the tax year is qualifying for pension purposes and if not, it will advise the amount required for it to do so.
If you don’t have a PTA you can set one up via link below

Or you may wish to call our National Insurance team and we’ll be able to check for you.
