RE: Small Profits Threshold
Hi VP,
1/ You will get the trading allowance as this will apply to your UK income that would still need to be reported under the remittance basis.
You can only claim this if your are self employed and you are not claiming other expenses against your self employment.
2/ If you are registered to pay Class 2 NICs, you complete the self employed pages of the tax return and tick the relevant box to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily.
Thank you.

RE: Exchange Fees
Hi paul,
The payment received is a one-off payment and will be charged to income tax not capital gains tax as there has been no disposal.
The exchange fee should be recorded in the ‘other income’ section of a Self Assessment return in SA100 TR3 Box 17 and a description in Box 21.

RE: Can you pay Class 2 contributions for years worked abroad in the past?
Hi samb100
When you return your CF83 application form please enclose a note to provide your periods of employment/self-employment from 6 April 2006, ie periods worked (from … to …) and what you were doing (employed/self-employed). Our International Team will then be able to quote any voluntary class 2 National Insurance contributions that you may pay from the 2006-2007 tax year. For any periods that you’ve not been employed or self-employed overseas then you may pay voluntary class 3 contributions.
Thank you. -
RE: voluntary contribution after retirement age
Hi OpentoLearn,
Voluntary National Insurance contributions are not payable from the tax year in which you reach State Pension Age. It would not be worthwhile to continue to pay as they would not improve your pension entitlement.
If you would like to check your pension entitlement please visit: Contact the Future Pension Centre or call them on 0800 7310175 (if in the UK) or +44 191 2183600 (if overseas).
Thank you. -
RE: UK State Pension Forecast taking in account contributions into Portuguese Social Security
Hi viriato,
At the time you reach UK State Pension Age and make your claim to pension, The Pension Service will contact the Portuguese Authorities to check any pension entitlement that you may have with them.
You may wish to speak with Future Pension Centre to check your current and future entitlement to a British State Pension.
Their telephone number is +44 191 2183600.
Thank you.
