RE: Checking number of years to pay voluntary Class 2 NIC
Hi Jacinta,
When making the payment you can request that your NI number is used as a reference so that we can correctly receipt this on to your NI record.
Normally we would advise NI number and surname and initials but as I don’t know the amount of space allowed you should check this when making the sterling request at your bank.
Thank you.

RE: A1 Social Security form for working abroad
Hi 00mc89,
If you reside outside the UK and work for a non UK company you will be liable for any social security regulations to that foreign authority and not the UK.
You should contact the Spanish authority to request whether they deemed you as employed or self employed in Spain.
You mention you currently pay National Insurance, if this is because you are registered as self employed but not residing in the UK you will need to cease your self employed registration in then UK.
Thank you. -

RE: whether SIPP contribution will be exempted from income tax
Hi alex,
A SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension) does not include National Insurance payments made into the plan. National Insurance is paid via an employer’s payroll.

RE: Pensions and National Insurance
Hi Rebecca,
If you advise your father to call the HMRC contracted out helpline listed below, they can confirm any periods when he has been contracted out of SERPS. The information we receive from employers details the national insurance paid and if contracted out was present at the time.
If you are trying to trace a pension that is not contracting out, you will need to contact the pension administrator of the employer.
Please see the link to the pension tracing service to assist you. Find pension contact details - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
HMRC contracting out helpline - 0300 200 3500
Open - Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Thank you.

RE: Mechanism for paying class 2 NI contributions from abroad
Hi classwho,
Historically, voluntary class 2 contributions were more expensive than the voluntary class 3 contributions. However, in the year 2000 it was decided to reduce the amount of voluntary class 2 contributions to help people in the UK who are self-employed. As a result the rate of voluntary class 2 contributions that our overseas customers could pay were also reduced.
Thank you. -
RE: Do I qualify for Class 2 NIC abroad?
Hi Antanas1963,
To be entitled to pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions whilst overseas, a person must be employed or self-employed overseas and were normally employed or self-employed in the UK before their departure. Full details are given in our leaflet NI38 ‘Social Security Abroad’ which you may obtain via Social Security abroad: NI38
If you would like to apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions whilst overseas please complete and return our CF83 application form after reading leaflet NI38 ‘Social Security Abroad’. You will find the CF83 via Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83).
Before applying to pay voluntary contributions I would advise to check your entitlement to a UK State Pension by obtaining a Pension Forecast. You may obtain one via Check your State Pension forecast.
Thank you.
