  • RE: Can I top up Class 2 NI contributions to qualify for ESA?

    Hi,
The option to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily is outlined on your tax return, the relevant option should be selected and the payment made through SA before 31 January following the end of the tax year.
It is now too late to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily through SA, you will need to call the NI helpline on 0300 200 3500. Lines are open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday.
They will confirm the relevant rate and  how much is needed for each year you wish to pay and how to make payment.
Anything paid after  31 January following the end of the tax year will be marked as ‘late paid’ and this will potentially affect how the NICs are used when assessing/re-assessing any claim to benefit.
Please note that the NI helpline cannot give any advice on benefit entitlement so you will need to know which years you wish to pay before calling. Any enquiry regarding benefit entitlement and how the late payment of NICs will affect a claim to ESA will need to be directed to the DWP
    Thank you.
  • RE: Home responsibilities protection

    Hi Kathleen Hunt,
You may not be seeing any HRP on your account for the tax years 1978-1985 as  if you reached State Pension Age (SPA) before 6 April 2010, you would not have been awarded any credits that would cover up gaps on your account.
HRP works by reducing the number of qualifying years you need for the full basic State Pension up to a maximum of 22 years
To get the full basic State Pension a woman normally needed 39 qualifying years and a man 44. For example, if  somebody had 15 years of HRP, it would reduce the number of qualifying years needed from 39 to 24
National Insurance (NI) credits awarded as HRP were not converted into credits for customers reaching SPA before 6 April 2010.
If you reached State Pension age after 6 April 2010, please contact us via telephone or webchat.

  • RE: Catch-22 with Common Reporting Standard and NI Numbers

    Hi,
To obtain a National Insurance (NI) Number you must have a reason:
    Employment including self employed
Claiming benefits or UK State Pension
As you have already advised you do not do either of these things, then there is no reason for you to obtain a UK NI number. NI numbers are a unique reference for an individual to pay UK tax and National Insurance.
Unfortunately there isn’t anything further we can advise, you will have to confirm this with your bank.
    Thank you.
  • RE: How do I pay voluntary Class 2 contributions to fill gaps in my NI record (property business)

    Hi,
You can no longer register as Self-employed without also registering for SA.
This is because the Class 2 NICs are collected when you submit the tax return.
If you have not earned enough throughout the tax year there is an option to pay voluntarily when submitting the SA returns.
You can no longer opt to fill in gaps by paying class 2.
Class 2 NICs are for Self employed individuals and although running a property business falls under this category you will still have to submit SA returns for all affected tax years.
    Thank you.
  • RE: statement of National Insurance Contributions (NICs)

    Hi,
As you submitted your request for an U1 online, then our International Team are dealing with requests made in July 2024 at the moment so you should have a reply by the end of September or the beginning of October 2024.
Please note that this is an estimate of the timescales and may change.
    Thank you.
  • RE: Pension extra contributions

    Hi,
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delay in dealing with your payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions, but it’s currently taking about 22 weeks for us to allocate payments to Personal Tax Accounts.
    Thank you.
  • RE: How do I pay Class 2 Voluntary National Insurance Contributions from overseas?

    Hi,
Your US bank may know the system as ‘wire transfers’.
    Our bank details are:
Business Identifier Code (BIC):  BARCGB22, Account Number (IBAN):  BARC 2020 4830 944793, Account Name:  HMRC NIC Receipts.
When sending payment by wire transfer please include your Reference Number which is in the following format:
Your National Insurance Number followed by IC then your surname and then your initial or as much of your name as possible.
    For example:  QQ123456AICJONESA
If you’d rather send a cheque to us then your bank may be able to provide you with one in Sterling after they have done all the conversions and you would send it to us with a covering letter.
    Thank you.
