Hello, I have registered online for Self Assessment on the 06th of April 2022 having started my own small business as a sole trader. I also registered on line to receive HMRC information via email at the same time. It was indicated that I would receive my UTR within 10 days by this method but I have still not received it. There are no pending documents shown in my Government Gateway personal tax account, neither are there any messages. I've tried to call the helpline number but hang up after 40 minutes, or have had the call terminated by the automated HMRC system. Can anybody advise me how to check if the application is progressing normally? Many thanks.

Hi,

Our usual timescale for setting up the UTR is 10 working days, however the timescale is longer than that currently.

If you contact our Self Assessment department we can check if the record has been created.

Thank you.

I have submitted the SA1 form for register for self assessment but do not receive the UTR number yet. I would like to know when can we receive it? By post or email? Thank you!

Hi LKF,

We would issue this by post.

Thank you.

Hello, I have the same question. The self assessment form was submitted since end of Sept and the UTR number is not yet received. Please advise if there is a hotline that I can check of the status. Thank you

When I applied for my UTR, it took several months. It turns out that HMRC was sending the document to my first address in the UK, where I had first applied for my NI number, even though I hadn't lived there for nearly 10 years! Things may have changed, but at the time, I had to sit on hold until I got an agent, then ask them to transfer me to someone who could change my address deep within their computer database. And yes, it was a bit wierd, because I'd been getting regular documents, even overpayment cheques, to my correct address!

I got the exact same issue, I did contact the self-assessment helpline, they are very helpful but they can't find out my application information. they seem only able to find the UTR when it is generated. the advisor has requested their back office team to call me back but it's been a few days I'm still waiting for their calls. I strongly suggest we should get the ref number or the confirmation email once we sent out the SA1 application form online. otherwise, no one can trace the application. it totally wastes everyone's time.
