Hi, In august 2022, I won a competition held by a USA based company and ended being one of the winners. The reward for winning was to receive a share of the royalties generated by the company. The value of my share of the royalties has fluctuated a lot over the past months but is upwards of 15000 USD in total so far. Is it necessary to declare these winnings to HMRC via the self assessment and, if so, what category of foreign income would this constitute as? Thank you, Erin

Hi
We would need more information before giving an opinion.
The details should be put in writing to HMRC including such things as how the competition was entered, was it random or was there an invite due to a particular trade or profession?
Is it dividends or royalties that are being received and was the prize the right to receive the dividends or royalties or was the prize just a payment of dividends or royalties.
Please provide full details in writing to

Or you may wish to seek independent professional advice.
Thankyou.
