RE: Retrospectively claiming NI credits
Hi,
We are unable to advise at present on the retrospective NI credits until the date you become available to apply for them.
The current voluntary national insurance tax years are extended from the standard 6 years until April 2025.
If you request a refund of National insurance currently, you are required to write in with the full reasons.
Thank you. -
RE: Retroactive National Insurance Class 2 Voluntary Contributions (pension gaps)
Hi ForDan,
You can potentially pay class 2 voluntary national insurance currently going back to 2006, it is available until April 2025.
However, paying class 2 overseas requires to be via the CF83 application process and this will be assessed on your individual circumstances.
Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)
Thank you. -
RE: How to pay from UK after CF83 approval.
Hi,
If you have been approved to pay voluntary national insurance and received confirmation that the tax years will enhance your state pension, please see the banking details to be used below for your scenario.
Class 2/3 for a period outside of the UK paying from a UK bank account still held.
BACS/CHAPS – Sort code 08-32-20 account number 12001004 as you have detailed in your message and is listed in the gov.uk link provided.
The reference to be used is: Your NINO followed by ‘IC’; your surname then initial.
If you are limited to a certain number of characters in your surname, use NINO followed by ‘IC’ and as much of your surname as possible for the 18 digits.
As you are voluntarily paying for tax years outside of the UK, you must use the 18-digit reference with IC so we are aware the money relates to overseas tax years.
For any problems, please call the overseas national insurance helpline – 03000 200 3500
Thank you. -

To do this, you will need to complete a new CF83 application - Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)
Please read the information held in the NI38 before completing the CF83 - Social Security abroad: NI38

RE: Can I get 18-digit reference number in letter? I'm hard of hearing.
Hi,
If you are a self-employed and are wanting to pay off the previous tax year, you do not pay with an 18 digit reference number, you pay your class 2 National Insurance through Self-Assessment.
Unless you are a part of the Self Employment Exemptions group, in this instance yearly voluntary bills will be issued out to you.
If your earnings are below the Small profits threshold which is currently £6,725 pa, you will not be charged class 2 automatically but you can opt to pay your class 2 voluntary through your self-assessment account.
If your earnings are in between the Small Profit Threshold and the Lower Profit Threshold (£12,570) your class 2 will be treated as made and will be covered for you and you will not need to pay.
If your earnings are over the Lower Profits Threshold you have to pay your class 2.
You will need to contact Self-Assessment via their Webchat or phone line and you can arrange with them the most convenient way for you to pay.
Please find the link below to their contact details.
Self Assessment: general enquiries
