    You will need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions.
    National Insurance credits from benefits are awarded by DWP and not HMRC.

  • RE: Can I make a voluntary NI contribution after claiming my state pension?

    Hi Teresa Carter,
    I can confirm that you may pay for the 2022-2023 tax year after you start claiming your pension but your pension will only increase from the date that we receive your payment.  
    It is possible to pay for the 2022-2023 tax year until 5 April 2029 but may be due at a higher rate if you pay after 5 April 2025.

    Hi johnny Finnis,
    You will need to write to HMRC to request a liability decision which will confirm if you are liable to pay National Insurance contributions in the UK whilst living in Japan, but working for a UK employer.
    Please provide the following information in your letter:
    •    your full name
    •    your National Insurance Number
    •    your date of birth
    •    the date you left the UK
    •    your most recent UK address
    •    your address abroad
    •    the type of work you do
    •    your company name and address – UK and abroad 
    •    where your contract is held
    •    how often you work in the UK
    •    your normal working pattern (the days, weeks or months you regularly work)

    We can not advice you on this forum if you are due a refund of National Insurance contributions
    You must write to International Caseworker and supply the following information:
    •    name
    •    National Insurance Number
    •    contact number
    •    details of the contributions you want refunded including
        amount that was paid
        when it was paid
        what year/years you paid for
        how you paid
        why you want a refund
        IBAN or bank account and sort code or who to make cheque payable to.

  • RE: Overseas Voluntary Payment of Class 2 National Insurance Contributions via SWIFT

    Hi agent_smith,
    Based on the information that you have provided, your payment should reach your National Insurance records. However, you can contact the National Insurance help line to check this.
    If your payment is not shown on your records, the advisor will ask you for the information shown on your transaction and they will be able to arrange for a search of the payment.
    The number to call is +44 (0) 191 2037010. Lines are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.
    If you’d rather contact HMRC by post, you can include a copy of the transaction with a covering letter providing us with the following information:
    •    How the payment was made
    •    The amount
    •    The date it was paid, and the date it cleared with your bank
    •    The HMRC account number and sort code that you used to make the payment
    •    Your sort code, account number, IBAN number and payment reference that you used
    Alternatively, you can use our webchat facility which can be found here National Insurance: general enquiries
    Please choose the option ‘Ask HMRC online’. This service is available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

    You will need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions, who will be able to answer the query that you have. 
    HMRC has no say in when and how you can make a claim the UK state pension.

    Regarding your query about claiming your late husbands national insurance credits, there is certain credits of national insurance that can be transferred between spouses Such as Home Responsibilities Protection or Parents and carers credits.

  • RE: NI Record for 2023/24

    Hi simon field,
    You will still be able to pay this after October.
    However, you can contact the National Insurance helpline now, and an advisor will be able to check your National Insurance records to see if your employment has been recorded yet, and if it has they will be able to advise you what the shortfall to pay, would be for that year.
    You can call them on 0300 200 3500, lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
