  • RE: Voluntary class 2 contributions for self-employed

    Hi Erin,
From April 2015 you can pay Class 2 voluntarily, via your Self Assessment return, if your profit is less than the Small Profits Threshold (SPT) up to 31 January following the year of the return.
If you wish to pay voluntarily after 31 January, you need to contact the NI Helpline 0300 200 3500 to arrange payment.
These contributions need to be paid before the end of the sixth year following the end of the tax year in which they were due.
If you do not have the option to pay voluntary through your tax return, you may only be registered for self assessment and will need to register as self employed.
You also may have reached thresholds which treat your contributions as being made and you will not need to contribute.
If you have past tax years where you were self employed and did not pay class 2 contributions you need to discuss with National Insurance to see if you are eligible to make payments.
You can call National Insurance on 0300 200 3500 or use the webchat service ‘ask HMRC online’ through gov.uk.
    Thank you.

  • RE: Do my years abroad count?

    Hi Erin Ortlund,
You can find the criteria for paying Voluntary Contributions abroad by reading NI38 on the gov.uk website.
You’ll then have to apply using the form CF83 Application to pay National Insurance Contributions abroad.
This can be completed online or by print and post.
Once we receive your application our caseworkers will be able to investigate your circumstances to see if you are eligible for making payments.
    Thank you.

  • RE: Retrospectively claiming NI credits

    Hi Claire,
Most ‘stay at home parents’ will claim Child Benefit (previously called Family Allowance) and due to this will receive a credit to cover any gaps that would otherwise normally be on the record.
The only way to check if you have any of these credits on your record would be to check your National Insurance record online via your Personal Tax Account or to call the National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500.
    Thank you.

  • RE: "Year is not full" for 23-24 tax year

    Hi Chun Yu Yip,
Once you have made a payment and the tax year is full, your Personal Tax Account will display it as being full.
You’ll not be able to make a payment through your Personal Tax Account.
If you can not get through to National insurance on 0300 200 3500 you can try using the webchat function to talk to an adviser.
You can also enquire about making voluntary payment by writing into us at
    PT Operations North East England
    HMRC
    BX9 1AN
Include your NINO, full name, address, and the details of your enquiry.
Please sign and date your letter even if you type and print out your letter.
    Thank you.

  • RE: Voluntary National Insurance contributions

    Hi Lesley Morton,
You cannot set up payments for a tax year which you are currently employed or have taken/will take up employment until the tax year has ended.
At which point you can check your State Pension Forecast through your Personal Tax Account (PTA) to see if you can make a payment to fill the shortfall online.
If you can not make a payment through your PTA, you can use the webchat function or call us on 0300 200 3500 to receive payment details.
You will need to discuss with the Future Pension Centre to see if making the payment will benefit your pension.
    Contact the Future Pension Centre
    Thank you.
