RE:Tax on interest - voluntarily do tax return to pay?
Hi NMM,
Yes, if you reach the higher rate tax band then the personal savings allowance is reduced to £500.
The banks do submit the interest details to HMRC at the tax year end and once we review if you have underpaid this will be collected in the following tax years code.
If you want to pay the underpayment instead you contact HMRC once the calculation is received we can advise of your options.

RE:Registering for Online Account
Hi amka,
As you already have a UTR and a live Self Assessment record you do not need to register for Self Assessment instead you would enrol to file your tax return online.
To do this go to:
HMRC online services: sign in or set up an account
Click 'add SA' and then use your UTR number with your NINO or post code to enrol.
This will trigger the issue of an activation code.
You will receive the activation code within 10 days (21 days if abroad).
Use your activation code here:
HMRC online services: sign in or set up an account
You can then access SA via your PTA landing page.
Thank you.

RE:Reporting savings interest
Hi NSilva,
If the interest is less than £10,000 then you do not need to submit a Self Assessment for your savings interest.
At the tax year end the bank/building societies will submit the interest details to HMRC and we will review the tax year.
If underpaid we will issue a calculation, P800, to you.
Thank you. -
RE:P85/ Savings interest rate
Hi mpamia,
On the P85 if your only UK income is bank interest then this is what you would declare.
On the P85 it asks for your bank details to send any repayment due to.
Thank you.
