Hi, I have recently taken a job where I will use my own vehicle for significant business usage. I will need to claim a portion of the allowance via self assessment as my company does not pay the full amount. I am on PAYE. I begin the job in March, but I have missed the self assessment deadline. Will I be able to claim any tax relief for the upcoming year? If so, how can I go about it?

Hi James Barlow,

If your expenses are going to be in excess of £2500 for the year, a tax return will be required.

As you started the job March 2023, the deadline for you has not yet passed and it will be the 23/24 tax year that you need the tax return for.

The final filing date for this tax return will be 31/01/25 so you can still register for Self Assessment.

Tax returns for the 23/24 tax year can be submitted anytime after the 05/04/2024.

Your start date will lbe 06/04/23.

Thank you.
