RE:Leaving UK tax refund
Hi Siu Tung Lam,
If you are leaving the UK then you would complete a form P85 to claim any repayment due.
On the form you can request repayment into a UK bank account.
You can complete the form online at:
Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK (P85)
Thank you. -
RE: Interest earned from money given by grandmother
Hi Frankie Chow,
A Self Assessment return would only be required to declare savings income of £10,000 or over.
While the £5000 is classed as taxable income, your son (depending on his other income) may be entitled to the tax-free starting rate for savings of £5000, and the Personal Savings allowance of £1000, in addition to his tax free allowance of £12570.
You can find more information here:
Tax on savings interest
Thank you.

RE:Voluntary Contributions Abroad - Class 2 or 3?
Hi John Heaps,
You have taken the correct action by contacting the International Pension Centre to request information about paying voluntary National Insurance contributions for previous years.
They will issue a letter to you advising what gaps you have, what rate you are eligible to pay, how much it will be and how to pay.
You may wish to contact them again to ask for a timescale for when you are likely to receive their reply.
Their contact number is +44 (0) 191 218 7777. Lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Thank you

RE: Gaps in my NI record as a result of staying in full time education
Hi Kazoo,
Prior to 2010 individuals were given credits for their National Insurance account for the first 3 tax years in their working life, for the tax years they reached ages 16, 17 and 18.
Credits were not given for periods of Full Time Education.
Any periods where you signed on as unemployed should also have given you credits and you should contact your local Benefits Office if credits are not recorded on your Personal Tax Account.
Thank you.
