RE:VAT for events held in the UK for US companies
Hi Rakhee Gudka,
As the supply is a business to business supply then the Place of Supply of the service would normally be where the business customer belongs.
So if the customer belongs in the UK then the supply would be Vatable in the UK and if the customer is overseas then the supply would be Outside The Scope of UK VAT.
Please see
4. Establishment most closely concerned with the supply
6. The place of supply rules for services
If you are charging admission for an event then the Place of Supply rules are different and the supply would be Vatable in the UK regardless of where the business customer belongs.
Please see below:
9. Services supplied ‘where performed’
Thank you.

RE: UK.GOV Account "The details entered don't match our records "
Hi Alexanderwilliamii,
To access and use many of HMRC's online services customers may have to verify their identity online.
Not everyone will be able to verify immediately as the service is in development and limited to questions about pay and tax from employment, Self Assessment, tax credit details, passport information, UK credit reference data, UK driving licence information and Northern Ireland driving licence information.
If you are locked out , you will see the message: 'We cannot confirm your identity, you have tried too many times, your account is locked for 24 hours'.
We cannot unlock your account.
If you are confident the details being entered are correct, you will need to report the issue using the link at the bottom of the page.
Thank you.

RE:NI payments when UK resident but foreign employer with no UK base
Hi aberdaff,
If you are continuing to live in the UK and paying into the US system, you may also need to be registered for Self-Assessment as you have foreign income.
If you choose not to pay into the US state, you will need a certificate of liability to not pay into the US and instead pay into the UK.
If you decide to pay into both states, you will only be able to pay into the UK one voluntarily as you may have overseas liability to the US.
Please call the National Insurance helpline to discuss your status and the US connection on 0300 200 3500.
Thank you. -
RE:SA wouldn’t allow me to pay voluntary class 2 NI contribution
Hi Demelza Dee,
As you were submitting your tax return before the 31/01/24 you should have been able to select the option to pay C lass 2 NICs o a voluntary basis.
To enable us to investigate why this was not possible, you will need to contact the NI helpline on 0300 200 3500. Lines are open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday.
Thank you.

RE:How are online payments allocated to a specific year?
Hi peadar,
Assuming you are making a payment for the entire 2020-21 year and there are no NICs or credits already held, the amount of Class 3 payable for that year is currently £795.60.
As this is the only year that can currently be paid at that rate, if a payment for this amount was received onto a NI record where the 2020-21 year was completely blank, this is the year we would allocate it to.
The 18 digit reference number you were previously given was relevant to the previous payment and should not be used for subsequent years.
The alternative is to call the NI helpline on 0300 200 3500. Lines are open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday.
Thank you.

RE:invoice in foreign currency, how to declare the mount to HMRC ?
Hi ju8689,
There are two ways to account for your sole trader income, regardless of where it arises.
You either use the traditional accounting method or the cash basis.
The cash basis is simpler to apply, but does have restrictions, that may mean it is not the best options.
Cash basis is the accounting of money coming into and going out of your bank account. E.g. "You invoiced someone on 15 March 2022 but did not receive the money until 30 April 2022. Record this income for the 2022 to 2023 tax year".
Guidance on the cash basis can be found here:
Cash basis
The traditional method of accounting will apply using the dates of the invoices e.g. "You invoiced a customer on 28 March 2022.
You record that invoice for the 2021 to 2022 tax year, even if you did not receive the money until the next tax year".
