Requested repayment in January, waited, waited .... nothing. Submitted another request later in Feburary ... waited, still no acknowledgment (but I saved the webpage confirming receipt). Just spoke to an advisor via chat (thankfully only a 30 min wait)... Apparently HMRC have no record of my requests for repayment in their backend systems. This is despite me having the webpage with the reference number confirming receipt! You couldn't make it up. So now I've requested a repayment for the THIRD time.

Hi jackjosh9,

Apologies for the delay in the repayment being issued. If selected for security checks then we need to allow the department dealing with the checks to complete these. As you have submitted a complaint then this will be reviewed and you will be contacted.

Thank you.

I did my self employed submission on time. I checked my account it said tax refund due. I requested it online, nothing happened. So I did it again, and as you can guess nothings happened. I have since January make 10 online requests for my refund. Its now May! No note on account for reviews, nothing. I won't be calling in as I have anxiety on the phone, but I will be making a formal complaint and requesting a review. Interest rates are good, and whilst this is in HMRCs account, it's not in mine.

I applied for my tax return 23 June 2023. It was confirmed by an email and also a letter, the letter and email stated that the repayment should be received within 2 weeks and could possibly take 4 weeks. It is now 11 June 2024 and I’ve still not received anything. This has caused major issues in my life with this late payment. I’ve got myself in so much debt with being told I will receive this money. I missed my kids birthdays as a result of these debts cause by this late payment. I have been seeing a mental health therapist as I have been struggling with the thought of suicide to escape these money problems cause by the hmrc. I don’t understand how working people have to pay taxes all year and get an absolute shambles of a company called the hmrc that clearly has no care about its tax payers or returning their overplayed taxes. I would like to see this resolved by the 23 June 2024. If I have not received a reply by then I will be taking this further.

I submitted my Self Assessment on the 30/01/2024 and shortly after that, my self assessment changed status to "payment pending" I called in late March to understand if there was any change to the status of my refund and I was confidently told by the agent that my payment was imminent. Obviously it was not. When I called again in April, a different agent informed me that all security checks were complete and this has now been handed over to the payments team and that I could expect payment within 10 weeks. We have now hit that threshold and there is still no sign of my refund nor any communication at all! How is it that when tax is owed to HMRC, it is treated as urgent and immediate but when a clear refund is owed for significant overpayment, they are allowed to drag out the process indefninitely.

I applied for my tax return 19/05/2023 for the 22/23 tax year and I still haven’t received it on 15/06/2024 which is over a year! I must of phoned them up 6/7 times regarding this, to start with I didn’t get any information as to why it is being held up, then I was told it was something to do with my banking so I went through all that on the phone and I was told it was all ok and will be in my account in 4 weeks. 6 weeks later it’s still not in my account so I rang them back up only for them to say it’s going through more security. Although they haven’t asked for any more information of me just told me to call back in August! I would just like for this to be resolved know as it’s causing me stress.

I have been waiting four months for a refund and I always get the same response from HMRC "Security Checks required and will take 6 weeks" Every 6 weeks same response not good enough.

What HMRC don't want to tell you is they can cope with the volumn of Tax Returns and staff that just can't cope. I work on a large site and loads been waiting since early April, so over 3 months which is totally unexceptable. One of the guys go a letter yesterday saying he wasn't set up for for CIS even though his been doing Self Assessment Tax returns for over 25 years, his CIS Vouchers even have his Verification Code on it, now fairly sure to get that the Main Contractors has to enter his details to show he is registered. Complete joke and it seems to get worst every year. Think a new charter should be issued and if HMRC guidelines of 6 weeks aren't met HMRC should be fined as they certainly fine us quick enough if we are late.

I did my self assessment tax return for 2023-24 online on 21st June 2024, I have looked online in general circumstances at it says should be 2 weeks but I have waited almost 9 weeks now , the good news is my return seems to have been checked and updated on Monday 19th August and my refund increased which I am grateful for. However I still have no way of knowing when my refund will be landing in my account and if they need anymore information from me

I have also not received any refund yet and this request was submitted on 06-jun-2024 but no update is yet received. I have come back to my home country and contacting with HRMC is difficult and their waiting time is more than 30 mins which is again frustrating. Apart from this, need to ensure I should not forget HRMC self assessment login details because there is no easy way to access that again.
