RE: Overseas employment (no presence in the UK)
Hi Tat Long,
As per the previous NI tech reply, you will not be able to pay class 2 NICs as a SE person.
Depending on your circumstances you may need to set up as a direct payer scheme and pay both employer and employee NICs.
We suggest you contact the Employers: support for new employers for advise giving full details of your situation.
Thank you. -
RE: Do I need to pay the gaps in my national insurance contribution record
Hi,
If you apply for a State Pension Forecast via Check your State Pension forecast, it will provide you with details of your current and future entitlement to a
State Pension Forecast and you can then decide whether you wish to pay any shortfalls of voluntary National Insurance contributions.
Thank you. -
RE: 18 years old, non-resident, can I start paying NI?
Hi,
As you have advised that you have never lived in the UK you are not currently entitled to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions.
If, however, you come to the UK and take up employment then you may apply for a National Insurance Number and the contributions that your
employer will deduct from your salary will be recorded.
Thank you. -
RE: Home responsibilities protection
Hi Neil,
I can confirm that Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) was only awarded for claims to Child Benefit for a full tax year (6 April to 5 April).
So if you were not in receipt of Child Benefit for the full tax year then the HRP would not have been awarded.
Thank you. -
RE: CF83 Application with a Temporary NINO?
Hi,
You should write to our International Team and provide them with copies of your P60s or payslips which show National Insurance contributions have been deducted from their salary.
You would ask to be registered for a National Insurance Number and advise the period that you lived in the UK.

RE: How to complete self assessment from a few years back without access to NI and from abroad?
Hi,
If the tax returns are for the tax years before 2022/23 then normally it would be too late to withdraw the tax returns.
The tax returns would need to be filed and then an appeal made against the penalties.
You can file the tax return online from the 2020/21 tax year, before that tax year it would need to be the paper tax return.
You can download the paper return Self Assessment tax return forms.
To review the tax years 2022/23 onwards you can contact us by phone/webchat/letter to review Self Assessment: general enquiries
