RE: Capital gain calculation for selling a property overseas
Hi CGTdoubt,
As you are a UK resident when you disposed of the overseas property, you may find that your Private Residence Relief will cover and gain arising.
You will need to work this out.
To do this all parts of the calculation will need to be in pounds sterling.
You would need to obtain your disposal value and convert to sterling using a just and reasonable exchange rate.
For your convenience, there are exchange rates here:
Exchange rates from HMRC in CSV and XML format
For older rates at:
Exchange rates
You are free to use any of the supplied rates or one of your own choosing, such as one from a recognised stock exchange.
You can find guidance on calculting Private Residence Relief here:
HS283 Private Residence Relief (2024)
And a calculator here:
Tax when you sell your home.
You will need to declare the disposal in a Self Assessment tax return.
Thank you. -

RE: Part time second job tax
Hi chris F,
Everyone is entitled to a tax-free allowance of £12,570.00.
This allowance may be reduced, though, if you receive State Pension, or pay the tax due on your property income through your code.
To allow us to review your code and explain this reduction in your tax-free allowances, contact us by webchat or phone here:

RE:How to tax on my interest, 40% or 20%
Hi tommy leung,
If your bank interest is your only source of income, the first £12,570 will be tax free, after your tax free allowance is applied.
After this, the Personal Savings Allowance allows an additional £1000 of bank interest to be received tax-free.
The next £37,700 of your income will then be chargeable at the basic 20% rate. The remaining £4000 will be chargeable at the 40% higher rate of tax.
Thank you. -
RE:Marriage Allowance & Non-residence
Hi JJ,
As long as your husband has a personal allowance, he can still apply to transfer a portion of this under Marriage Allowance, even if he lives abroad.
You can find out more here:

RE: Self assessment repayment delays
Hi The Flying Scotsman,
We are for the issues you've experienced in trying to progress your repayment claim.
While the security checks we're required to conduct usually take around 6 weeks, they can occasionally take longer depending on any additional work we need to do.
For example, if we needed to confirm with your bank the figures you provided.
If you'd like to review the progress of your repayment, you can contact us via the methods previously described, but if you'd like to raise a complaint, you can do so by searching for 'Complain about HMRC' on gov.uk.
Thank you.
