Why does the declaration of Gift Aid contributions section state "optional"? I understand why someone would record gift aid contributions if they were a higher rate taxpayer, but this section suggests by the word "optional" that I can decide whether or not to record my voluntary charitable donations EVEN AS A BASIC RATE TAXPAYER. It makes a big difference whether I do or do not record the contributions whenever I make a loss in my self employed business - to the tune of some hundreds of pounds refund if I do not declare and a small amount of tax owing if I do declare. Can someone enlighten me as to why "optional" is there?

Hi David Preston,

The boxes are optional as some of the boxes may not apply to your situation.

Thank you.
