I have registered and file tax return for year for self-assessment as NON self-employed. I have my UTR already. But I would like to start my self-employment now. I know I should register for Sole Trader. Is there any other form I need to fill in, e.g. register for self-assessment as Self-employed?

You have to register for self-assessment as a sole trader. You'll receive a new UTR for your self-employment business (your actual UTR is your personal UTR). Then you'll have to register to pay NI contributions.

Hi,

You should complete the form CWF1 to register for self employment.

Register for Self Assessment

Thank you.

Does that mean the new UTR (created after registered as a sole trader) will replace my current UTR (created when I registered for self-assessment as non self-employed)?

Can you explain to me why it's different for everyone one as me andy brother are both self employed and we both did our returns and sent them at the same time, altho I have had to claim for my refund and am still waiting for it and need it to help pay for my dad's funeral and yet my brother did not need to claim and he received his refund automatically and within a week why is this and how do HMRC justify that

Hi Kwan
No.
You should continue to use the same UTR.
The self assessment tax return supplementary page SA103 covers self employment.
Thankyou.

That's confusing... I have the same UTR since registered as sole-trader 10 years ago. I went on and off canceling sole-trading (by being PAYE) and returning by re-registering as a sole-trader. Noone ever said to me I have to have 2 UTRs.... What should I do ???

HMRC Admin 10, thx for your reply. Do I still need to fill in the CWF1 form now to inform HMRC about setting up my self-employment? Or do I just report my self-employment income on SA103 upon file the self-assessment return?

Hi VickyVey
For individuals, the 10 digit UTR number is assigned for life.
Where there is a bankruptcy, a new UTR is required post bankruptcy, with the old UTR never being used again.
If you have accidentally created a second UTR, you will need to contact the self assessment helpline, quoting both UTRs, so that the helpline will be able to close down the extra UTR, so that only one exists.

Hi Kwan,

Before you can submit a self assessment tax return, you need to register for self assessment.  If you are self employed and have not registered before, you will need to register with CWF1.

You can do this online here -

Register for Self Assessment

Once you are registered and have your 10 digit UTR number, you can submit a tax return online or by downloading a paper version here File your Self Assessment tax return online

Thank you.

I am a director of a company, and when I put my self assessment in I was owed over £4k roughly in repayment to myself, but form went to security check, then after 3 months, apparently got declined and they now say I owe £2500, but the mix up is that I think my personal and company UTR have been mixed up and my company is using my Personal UTR..? Can anyone advise or help?

Dear HMRC admin team, I need a copy of my SA302 for the last two years for mortgage purposes. I have tried to call 0300 200 3310 on several occasions in the last few months with no success rate in speaking to your team. Furthermore my HMRC account does not appear to have an option to download the SA302 reports. Please can you advise the best way to download these reports, as previously your team used to send the hard copy reports to my home. Thank you Margaret

Hi

You arrived in the UK in the tax year 2022 to 2023 and started work being self employed.

This means that you must complete a 2022 to 2023 tax return.

You can register for self employed assessment at Check how to register for Self Assessment. Once registered we will send you your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)

You can submit your tax return online once you have received your UTR. Full guidance is available at Self Assessment tax return forms or download a paper SA100_tax_return and post

Thank you
