I have registered for self assessment a few months ago by post and got a UTR number in a letter in return, I cannot verify through online portal due not being able to complete identity verification evidence so I have no choice but to use the post option. I am unemployed but have a small online business and make more than the trading £1000 allowance threshold so I am aware of needing to declare it. Does HMRC send you a letter to confirm you have to complete the self assessment return by end of October deadline or are you expected to fill out the self employed forms on HMRC site regardless, before that deadline and post it even if they didn't mention to? Also do you owe anything if you make below the personal allowance threshold? If anyone can help I'd appreciate it very much thank you, I find it very stressful.

Hi,

If you have registered before the tax year has ended, we will send a Notice to File requesting that you complete the tax return.

If you are below the Personal Allowance threshold you will have no tax to pay however you may be required to pay an amount
for class 2 and class 4 National Insurance.

See :

Self-employed National Insurance rates  .

Thank you.

Hi,

If you registered with a start date during 2021/22, your deadline for the paper return would be 31 October 2022. The deadline for an online return is 31 January 2023.

Thank you.
