I lost a considerable sum on the disposal of listed shares this year, I understand I can carry the loss over to next year. Can I keep carrying it forward until it has been offset by gains in future years? Is it only possible to offset against capital gains on listed shares? as I will make a capital gain on sale of shares in a couple of non listed companies next year. Thanks.

Hi,

A capital loss can be set against any future taxable capital gain that you make.

It is carried forward until such time you wish to use it see further guidance at :

Capital Gains Tax: what you pay it on, rates and allowances   .

Thank you.
