Hi, I’ve just completed my self assessment and as my pay went just above £60k last year I need to pay back the child benefit, which I understand. However the calculation says I need to pay back over £1900 whereas I only received £1827 in child benefit. Can you advise why this is? All my income was via PAYE and the system confirmed I had paid the correct income tax so it should just be the child benefit I need to pay back.

The return would not request that more than the child benefit amount is paid back. There may be a discrepancy in terms of the PAYE deducted. You may need to check your tax code to see if you had any allowances you have not claimed on the return.

Thank you.
