Do I need to register as self employed if my earnings after using the trading allowance are under £1000?

Hi Piglet123 Poobear,
Yes, as this is still taxable income and your turnover is over £1000
Self Assessment tax returns
Thank you.

I am university professor. I often get small amounts of money for giving scientific advice. I have always declared this as "other UK income" on my self-assessment form. From late 2024 onwards, I will be giving a lot more advice and will earn over 25000 this way. Before I start doing this, do I have to register as self-employed? If so, how? Is there anything else that I have to do?

Hi mathman,
Yes, you would need to register as self employed;
Set up as a sole trader: step by step
You would still have the same Unique Tax Reference, UTR.
At the tax year end you would complete the self employed page when you submit your tax return.
Thank you.
