Self-assessment was submitted on the 4th August, since w/c status has been showing as 'bank repayment pending'. Yesterday I contacted HMRC through the online chat and was advised I would receive payment on 23rd August, today I contacted to check and was advised that the repayment has been sent for security checks and would now be six weeks. How can you actually provide someone (after over 10 online working days) with an actual date of repayment and then within 24 hours contradict that response completely? Surely all checks have been completed before you can advise someone of an actual day & date of repayment?

Hi EDA,
If it has changed from pending, this may mean that it has been issued.
If it has please allow 10 working days to be received.
Thank you.

I feel seriously let down by the whole self-assessment process. It feels like if you have a repayment then there is really no intention (without making you jump through hoops for months) to get it back. A completely different approach to collection of underpayments I'm sure.

Hi Dazzler 1875,

A repayment will be received within 10 working days if it is showing as 'issued' on the system. If the repayment is still showing as pending and was submitted 4 August 2023, it is likely to have been selected for additional security checks.

Thank you.

Well folks, the SA Helpline has reopened and I even managed to get through in less than the forecast wait time of an hour (only by a few minutes, but a win is a win). The extremely helpful and very apologetic person on the other end explained about the security checks: it's with a specialist team (yes I knew all this). Apparently this team posted an update in mid August to say 'claims will be reviewed within ten weeks'. Which takes us to the middle of November. Happy days, just in time for Christmas, I'd best tell the kids they can start writing their letter to Santa after all ... ;-)

Hi. I completed my tax return on 06/04/2023 requested repayment maybe a week later or so. I'm still currently waiting to receive these funds that are sat at repayment pending for nearly 6 months! Everytime I speak to someone they just say it's going through extra checks come back in 8 weeks. 3 times this has happened. And now they can't even tell me what's going on because nobody knows. Just told to keep waiting. When I owed money last year I got fined for not paying when they wanted me to! How is this fair?

Hi. I applied for self assessment on August 18 and I'm still in bank repayment pending. How long do these "additional checks" take? Thank you.

Same thing. Submitted my SA on 7th of June, patiently waited for 8 weeks and no luck, the status is "Pending". I contacted the agent through the chat service (phone waiting time is about an hour), so they told me they are running low on stuff etc etc, but promised to ping the corresponding team. Week passed since then -- no updates whatsoever. If somebody from the HMRC authority can give at least average estimation for repayment that would be great. I don't mind to wait, but if you start managing expectations by saying "8 weeks", you should stick to it or at least give an updated estimation. I'm counting on my tax return in my budget planning and the feeling of uncertainty doesn't contribute to my financial confidence and long-term planning. On a side note, if somebody actually got their tax return, mind telling the rest how much did it take on practice? Many thanks.

I put in my self assessment on 22nd June 2023. Refund of over £7k- wow, I thought. I was told 2 weeks for my refund 2 weeks rolls around- no payment I webchat (because the phone line is off until September) and am told wait another up to 12 weeks for 'extra security and ID checks" 12 weeks later: I'm still at 'pending'- I called on the 11th September to be told I'd 'cleared the additional security checks' and 'there's no reason why I shouldn't have the payment yet'.... But it 'could be up to another 8 weeks- at least 2, call back then' 13 weeks and counting, still at 'pending' and no end in sight. Already have an hour pencilled in on Monday 25th to be told (I'm sure) another excuse and another period of weeks I need to wait. Formal complaint made here and I have raised it with my MP- not that I expect either with improve matters.

Hi I completed a amendment to my sa a week ago and the next day my account was in credit of 4250£ I wanted to split the payment over two bank accounts so put a withdrawal request in for 500 to my current account first and then realised you could not do multiple withdrawals, and had to wait 48hrs to withdraw again. I came back 2 days later and the remainder had been automatically withdrawn to bank. Now the 500 arrived 2 days later, however the remainder is showing bank repayment pending for the last 3 days, is it possible the second one has been stopped for security checks or with both payments being for the same sa if one has come straight away should the remainder also have passed all checks ?

My repayment issue dates now at least two years now, i have requested repayment, i have chatted, i have gone through security checks, i have spent money for tax advisers and they always send me back to contact hmrc for repayment as they cannot do this on my behalf, with the tough times after pandemic, loss of jobs, increase in living costs, despite all these, am still stuck with repayment issues, it would be fair and a relief for hmrc to just inform me they will not repay, i have taken loans, and in debts, but still, this money sits on my account pending, since 2018, 2019, and 2020, and am doubting now if am going to get the refund totalling £4878.82...av even requested just part of the money, but to no avail, just to offset bills and debts, am writing a letter now to hmrc enclosing the request of a repayment, ....sent on the 14 of july 2023 at 15:50, self assemnt 2018 £1609.20........, 2019 £1643.19......, 2020 £1626.43.....totall 4878.82, and hopefully clear my credit score as my accounts are just a disaster, to a point i cant even accept a loan offer as it will sink me deeper into debts, for now am just living "diging a hole to fill another hole" in debts, ...and my income is just swallowed in overdrafts...

Hi Traian Amaritei,

We aim to complete the security checks within 6 weeks, however they can take longer depending on the current number of cases. Usually if any further information is required we will contact you in writing.

Thank you.

Well folks, another month has come and gone and we are well into the season of 'mist and mellow fruitfulness'. Unfortunately it's more 'missed (deadlines) and hollow fruitlessness' where HMRC and SA repayments are concerned. What's that old Genesis lyric: 'So the days, they turn into years, And still no repayment appears, I'll be skint awhile...' At least I think that's how it goes... ;-) Ah well, keep the faith, let's see if October brings any joy.

Well what do you know - my number came up - status has changed today from 'pending' to 'issued'. Happy days and my condolences to those of you still waiting - hopefully everyone's will be sorted soon.
