I got married a number of years ago and have been living outside the uk since. I’m trying to apply to make backdated NI payments but I can’t set it up online as hmrc still have my maiden name. I can’t update my name online as it won’t allow me to as the only identification documents I have are in my married name. I can’t get through to anyone on the phone. What can I do?

Hi,
We are  sorry that you are having difficulty using our online services.  As you are now living abroad and also want to know about shortfalls in your National Insurance record, you should read the leaflet NI38 which is available at Social Security abroad:
Social Security abroad: NI38  It also includes the application form CF83 for paying Voluntary NICs.
Please complete and return this application form if you wish to continue paying Voluntary NICs into UK and/or if you just want to know about shortfalls in your UK record.
You should also include an employment history abroad if you are applying for Class2 NICs.
You can also include a copy of your Marriage Certificate with the form and we can then update your NI record with your marriage details and your new address abroad.
Thank you.
